Binance US, the American wing of the crypto exchange Binance, is due to raise up to $100 million at a valuation of around $1 billion as it looks to grow its crypto business in the US and compete with Coinbase, Kraken, Robinhood and Gemini. Trump-backed World Liberty Financial has reportedly decided against putting in money for the Binance funding round, despite its ties to the crypto exchange, while also considering predicting markets and state licences as it expands its footprint
A Bloomberg report says Binance US is looking for new investors to help grow its business at a time when crypto exchanges are battling it out for dominance in the US market. The company is hoping to strengthen its position by growing its crypto offerings and services in the US.

World Liberty Financial was aware of the proposed funding round but decided against investing due to its relationship with Binance. The exchange has a large amount of the supply of World Liberty Financial’s USD1 stablecoin and has also run promotional campaigns featuring the stablecoin.
Meanwhile, the connection between the two businesses has drawn attention for another reason. Last year, Abu Dhabi-backed investment firm MGX invested $2 billion in Binance’s global business using USD1 stablecoin.
Binance US previously raised $200 million in 2022 at a pre-money valuation of $4.5 billion but the value of the business has fallen since then. One key factor was Binance’s settlement with the US Department of Justice (DOJ) over anti-money laundering violations.
The company is thinking of multiple ways to grow its business, including launching prediction markets and restoring some state money transmitter licenses. These are crucial for its operations in different regions.
The company may also look to bolster its liquidity, including from its global operations, in order to fund its expansion plans.
However, Binance US still has to contend with regulatory scrutiny as the US Department of Justice is reportedly looking into whether it is following the terms of its 2023 settlement. The exchange was required to bolster its anti-money laundering controls and hire external monitors to oversee its compliance.
The fundraising exercise could help put Binance US on a growth path but its future prospects will depend on its ability to draw in investors, compete in the market and navigate the regulatory landscape in the US.
