Shinhan Asset Management, one of South Korea’s largest financial institutions, has partnered with the Solana Foundation, Etherfuse and Orca to explore the issuance and distribution of a tokenized investment fund denominated in the Korean won.
The four organizations signed a memorandum of understanding covering a proof-of-concept for the proposed fund. The initiative reflects growing interest among traditional financial institutions in using blockchain technology to issue and distribute regulated financial products.
According to Shinhan, the project is being modeled partly on BlackRock’s BUIDL tokenized fund, one of the most prominent examples of traditional financial assets being represented on blockchain infrastructure.
Under the proposed structure, overseas institutional investors could purchase a Korean won-denominated ultra-short-term bond fund managed by Shinhan Asset Management. Then, they would take the form of tokens on the blockchain, potentially allowing investors to interact with the financial instrument on the blockchain.
The project would serve as a proof-of-concept for realizing traditional financial instruments on public blockchains, while still enforcing institutional oversight and regulatory compliance.
Solana is positioning itself as an infrastructure provider for tokenized real-world assets, with financial institutions and asset managers considering use cases that range from funds and securities to payments and settlement.
For Korea, the project is seen as part of the country’s push to embrace the digital asset ecosystem, as well as blockchain technology, and regulators are looking to encourage institutional adoption of the technologies.
The proof-of-concept is only just getting off the ground, and the design of the fund offering is still being worked out. At the same time, the collaboration is yet another example of traditional financial institutions getting into tokenization via blockchain technology.
If and when the experiment sees success, it would pave the way for traditional capital markets infrastructure to meet the needs of institutional investors in a digital age.
