This move happens before the October 30 compliance deadline. Brazilian regulators are adding rules for cryptocurrency businesses and banks that provide digital asset services.
Itau Formalizes Bitcoin & Crypto Trading Operations
According to Valor Economico, which reported the news on October 27, Itau’s registration includes cryptocurrency services that started in December 2023 through its banking platform.
The bank now offers 15 assets, including Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Solana (SOL), XRP, and the USDC stablecoin. Customers can start investing with as little as R$10. Itaú handles cryptocurrency custody using its systems.
However, the bank has not shared how many customers are using these services or the trading volumes from its cryptocurrency activities.
Itau’s digital assets executive, Guto Antunes, has highlighted customer security, clear regulatory standards, and strong governance as factors for financial institutions working in the crypto market.
Brazil’s New Crypto Rules Set October 30 Deadline
Brazil’s central bank created a set of rules for companies that deal with virtual assets. These rules will start on February 2, 2026. According to a rule called Resolution 520, financial companies that are already allowed to work can tell the bank when they offer certain types of cryptocurrency services.
Companies that only work with assets must get a license according to the rules for getting permission. Companies that are already working have 270 days to finish the paperwork. The last day is October 30. These companies also need to show that they meet technical standards for their work and security.
Some smaller crypto businesses are worried about these rules. A company called Lemon, which is based in Argentina, said it is leaving Brazil because the costs of getting a license are too high.
