U.S. Bank has completed its first live cross-border payment using USBDC, its dollar-backed stablecoin, marking a move from blockchain testing to an actual financial transaction. The pilot was carried out between U.S. Bancorp’s banking entities in North America and Europe, with the transfer settled on the public Stellar blockchain. The bank integrated the blockchain payment with its finance, risk, compliance and operations systems, allowing funds to move on-chain while retaining existing banking controls.

The pilot also included testing the minting and redemption of USBDC, along with freezing and clawback capabilities. These features are important for a bank because they can provide greater control over digital funds and help address compliance and risk requirements.

U.S. Bank is looking at USBDC for institutional uses such as treasury payments, liquidity management and collateral-related transactions. It is also assessing digital payment solutions that can operate outside traditional banking hours, potentially allowing institutions to move funds more flexibly.

However, the transaction does not mean that USBDC is ready for a broad public launch. U.S. Bank has not announced a commercial launch date or wider customer access. It has also not indicated that the stablecoin will be made available for cryptocurrency trading or public exchange use.

The bank has not disclosed the value of the cross-border payment or indicated how frequently such transactions could take place in the future. Further testing will be needed before USBDC can move beyond its current institutional focus.

The development comes as major financial institutions increasingly explore blockchain-based payment and settlement systems. Goldman Sachs, Bank of America, Citi and Wells Fargo are among 21 institutions backing another stablecoin venture that plans to launch a dollar-pegged digital currency in the first half of 2027. The group also plans to study tokens linked to other G7 currencies, including the euro.

U.S. Bank’s initiative remains separate from that project. For now, the USBDC pilot shows how traditional banks are increasingly testing stablecoins not as speculative crypto assets, but as potential tools for moving money and managing liquidity within the financial system.
