- THORChain resumed Bitcoin and Ethereum swaps after 101 of 111 nodes upgraded to v3.21.1; trading is live on 10 of 13 external networks.
- The halt was triggered by a one-block Ethereum reorg that caused a 10 ETH deposit to be double-credited; an automated solvency check detected the shortfall and suspended swaps.
- The extra 10 ETH was returned by the recipient, restoring the vault balance and clearing the way for the protocol to restart.
- Cosmos Hub, BNB Smart Chain, and Solana remain halted; RUNE rallied 15 percent following the swap resumption announcement.
What Caused The Halt
Trading on THORchain was halted after a single block re-org occurred on Ethereum. This resulted in the protocol running short on 10 ETH in the vault after it was credited to a user.
Swapping on several blockchains has resumed following the 3.21.1 update.
Trading blockchains: AVAX, BASE, BCH, BTC, DOGE, ETH, LTC, RUNE, TRON, XRPL, ZEC
Halted blockchains: ATOM, BSC, SOL
14 active nodes still haven’t updated to 3.21.1. All active nodes need to update to 3.21.1 to fix performance issues with swapping.
The 3.21.1 update also gets THORChain one step closer to launching Monero.

This triggered THORchain’s automated solvency check which detected the deficit, and stopped Ethereum from trading. This then prompted node operators to stop signing transactions on multiple other networks.
Resolution & v3.21.1 Update
After the user who had been double funded sent back the 10ETH the vault was brought back to correct levels. This meant that there was no longer an issue with the solvency of the protocol and the v3.21.1 upgrade was released.
As node operators upgraded 101 out of 111 active nodes were upgraded to the new version. This meant that Bitcoin and Ethereum could be confirmed as trading once again. The protocol status page shows they are trading and showing OK status on both networks. THORchain’s native token Rune rallied 15% after news.
Three Networks Still Paused
Whilst most of the 13 external chains are now trading, Cosmos Hub, BNB Smart Chain and Solana are still halted. The protocol status page shows they are warning on these chains.
At the time of the restart announcement only 14 active nodes have upgraded to v3.21.1. These three chains are halted due to upgrades being required and further checks being done on outgoing signing. THORchain has not given a set time for them to return to trading.
