The Sui blockchain team says it has finished a major upgrade that fixes the software problems behind three outages that disrupted the network over 48 hours.

The outages happened on May 28 and 29, causing over 15 hours of downtime. The first outage lasted almost six hours, and two more interruptions the next day made things worse. The Sui Foundation says all systems are now back to normal after validators applied the latest fixes.

A detailed review found that the problems started with bugs in version 1.72 of the network software. One bug was in the gas-charging system. Sometimes, the system tried to take fees from transactions that had already been cancelled for not having enough funds. This led to negative balances and caused validators to crash.

A temporary fix got the network running again, but it revealed another problem and caused a second outage. The third outage happened when validators restarted the network and ran into issues with the on-chain randomness system, which some applications use for unpredictable results.

The Sui Foundation said user funds were never at risk and no confirmed transactions were reversed during the outages. Still, the disruptions hurt market confidence. The SUI token dropped sharply after the incidents and is still below its earlier levels.

To avoid similar problems in the future, the foundation plans to improve systems that contain failures, make the network more resilient at the end of each epoch, and keep investing in AI tools that help engineers find the issues faster.

These events are the third big reliability challenge for Sui since its mainnet launch in 2023. They highlight how important network stability is as blockchain platforms try to attract both institutions and everyday users.
