  • Kim Yo Jong, sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, denied that North Korea was behind the $6.3B Binance hack.
  • She brushed off the FBI’s attribution. Then she claimed, with no proof, that the US itself could be behind the theft.
  • TRM Labs, Chainalysis and ZachXBT have all tied the attack to North Korean hackers.

Kim Yo Jong says North Korea had nothing to do with the $6.3 billion hack at Binance, the exchange where users trade and store digital assets. She floated another idea: maybe the United States pulled it off. She didn’t back that up with any evidence.

The announcement went out Tuesday through the Korean Central News Agency, the state’s news outlet. It was a direct contradiction to the FBI, which says a hacking group tied to Pyongyang carried out the attack.

Pyongyang Calls The FBI’s Claim Politically Motivated

Kim said the FBI wants to brand North Korea, formally the DPRK, a “cyber criminal state.” The agency claims it has evidence tying a DPRK-backed hacking group to the breach, she said. She dismissed the allegation as “absurd rhetoric and nothing new.”

According to Kim, the accusation was nothing more than a political jab meant to hurt North Korea’s standing abroad. She said Washington always reaches for this same move after major hacks. Earlier, the FBI had blamed North Korea for the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in February 2025, yet another crypto exchange breach. Kim brushed off that allegation too, in her statement.

Kim Points Toward Who Might Benefit

Kim went further still, raising suspicion about the US. According to her, tracing whoever ends up with the recovered stolen crypto could unmask who’s really responsible for the attack. She presented no proof linking Washington to it.

Investigators Link The Attack To Earlier North Korean Operations

Last week, blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs attributed the Binance attack to TraderTraitor, a hacking group linked to North Korea. The firm said it held high confidence in that finding, based on both onchain and offchain intelligence. Blockchain analytics company Chainalysis and independent investigator ZachXBT have also connected the theft to North Korean hackers.

TRM Labs found several familiar patterns from past North Korean operations, including extended preparation and the use of crypto mixer Tornado Cash to fund wallets. Still, this time the laundering trail broke from the pattern seen in the Bybit hack.

ZachXBT found something else: the Binance and Bitget hacks are linked. Stolen funds from both cases landed at the same address. They’d passed through the cross-chain protocol THORChain first. Bitget CEO Gracy Chen said early findings tied some IP addresses to VPN services used by a known DPRK hacking group.
