South Korea Reviews Polymarket Over Possible Illegal Gambling Violations

South Korea is formally reviewing the blockchain-based prediction market Polymarket to see if it breaks the country’s gambling laws. Concerns that Polymarket’s event-based betting would be seen as unlawful internet gambling prompted the Korea Communications Standards Commission to launch an inquiry. Before a final decision is reached, Polymarket will have an opportunity to reply.

The platform may be prohibited in South Korea if it is discovered to have broken local regulations. This would be the nation’s first significant regulatory action against a cryptocurrency prediction market.

This review shows South Korea’s careful stance on cryptocurrency, especially when it comes to speculative financial products. The KCSC, which monitors harmful online content, said its telecommunications subcommittee is now looking at Polymarket’s business model and legal status under current gambling laws.

The commission has asked Polymarket to explain its position before making a final decision. Regulators will determine whether Polymarket’s prediction markets, where users wager cryptocurrencies on actual events, qualify as unlawful online gambling under South Korean law.

Some of the world’s harshest gambling regulations are found in South Korea. With the exception of a few state-approved enterprises, the majority of internet betting is prohibited. Regulators have frequently taken action against unlicensed betting sites, even directing internet service providers to prevent access to these sites.

Elections, sports, economic news and international crises are just a few of the real-world events that Polymarket allows users to bet on. The platform differs from traditional betting sites in that it operates on a blockchain and employs bitcoin for transactions. Regulators in many nations have also been increasingly interested in this decentralized system.

If the KCSC decides Polymarket has broken South Korean law, it can act, such as telling internet providers to block the platform. This would make it much harder for people in South Korea to use Polymarket and could lower trading activity from the country.
