Solana Network has completed an essential mainnet upgrade that lowers the on-chain target slot time from 400 milliseconds (ms) to 350 ms, the first step towards cutting it to 200 ms. The update follows the SIMD-0525 proposal and aims to lower the target slot time on the blockchain to 350 ms as a step towards eventually dropping it to 200 ms.

A slot refers to a period of time during which a validator takes turns with others to produce a block of transactions on the Solana blockchain. The proposal noted that shorter slots would lower confirmation and finalization latency, thus accelerating transaction processing and enhancing network responsiveness.

The latest adjustment to the target slot time also impacts the so-called epochs, a unit of time in the Solana blockchain that consists of 432,000 slots. This is because the shorter the slot time, the shorter the epoch duration. Therefore, the 48-hour epoch (at the 400 ms slot time) will be reduced to about 42 hours under the new settings.

Validators would still take turns to bake a block of transactions on the Solana blockchain, but their shifts would be shorter, about 1.4 seconds compared to 1.6 seconds. The 350 ms target slot time represents the first step towards eventually lowering it to 200 ms and further improving the performance of the blockchain.

This adjustment comes as Solana seeks to further enhance its status as one of the fastest blockchain networks at the moment. Faster confirmation times are important for decentralized applications such as decentralized exchanges, wallets, payment systems, trading applications, and other blockchain-based platforms that call for quick transaction finalization.

However, faster processing speed would put higher demands on validators and other components involved in accelerating blockchain transactions. Therefore, the adjustment to the slot time would be critical as Solana works to eventually lower the target slot time to 200 ms.
