Using a framework similar to the SEC’s approach to tokenized securities, Ondo Finance has introduced blockchain-based versions of Micron Technology shares and BlackRock’s iShares Core S&P 500 ETF. While custody, shareholder rights, and compliance are still managed by conventional financial systems, these products are issued on Ethereum by a transfer agent registered with the SEC. Although U.S. investors are not currently able to participate in the offering, Ondo claims it demonstrates how tokenized securities may operate under existing U.S. legislation.
According to the firm, Oasis Pro TA, the SEC-registered transfer agency it acquired last year, is responsible for issuing the tokenized securities. Key shareholder services including communications, regulatory reporting, and proxy voting will be handled by Broadridge, a financial infrastructure provider.
Token holders in this configuration have governance rights comparable to those of investors with standard brokerage accounts. Ondo’s concept incorporates blockchain technology within the existing securities system rather than replacing it.
According to the business, this is the first use of the SEC’s third-party custodial tokenization approach in a practical setting. In this arrangement, investors have a direct, one-to-one claim to those assets through blockchain tokens, while regulated custodians retain the real shares.
According to Ian De Bode, CEO of Ondo Finance, the business has developed the operational and regulatory frameworks required to enable several tokenization models in the United States. He described the launch as a significant step toward expanding regulated on-chain investment choices for both domestic and foreign investors.
Tokenization is rapidly emerging as a crucial connection between digital assets and traditional finance. Advocates believe it can revolutionize financial markets by enabling continuous trading, expediting settlements, and simplifying the transfer of assets on blockchains. According to Citi, the market for tokenized assets might grow to $5.5 trillion by 2030.
Ondo’s methodology was impacted by the SEC’s January staff statement, which clarified how third-party custodial tokenization may adhere to current securities regulations. These declarations demonstrate the regulator’s present state of mind even if they are not official regulations.
This debut coincides with increased industry discussion on tokenized equities that are issued independently of the original firm. As evidence of ongoing discussions over investor rights, OpenAI made it plain last year that it has not authorized Robinhood’s tokenized shares linked to the business.
Ondo’s most recent move coincides with the continued rise of tokenized stocks in both traditional and cryptocurrency markets. Tokenization efforts are being undertaken by organizations such as the New York Stock Exchange, DTCC, Robinhood, and Nasdaq in an effort to modernize the financial markets.
NEW: Ondo Finance is bringing BlackRock’s IVV ETF and Micron shares on-chain.
