MARA Holdings Buys 1,292 BTC As AI Leaders Call For Safety & Slower Development

Bitcoin miner MARA Holdings has bought 1,292 BTC, worth about $98.64 million, through FalconX, according to on-chain analytics platform Lookonchain. The purchase comes as leaders from the artificial intelligence industry call for a slower and more tightly supervised pace of AI development, raising questions about the sustainability of the current AI investment boom. MARA’s latest Bitcoin accumulation is one of its major recent purchases and comes after the company sold a large amount of BTC earlier this year as it shifted some focus towards AI infrastructure. The company now holds 35,577 BTC, including 9,270 BTC under its digital asset management strategy.

Lookonchain reported the transaction on September 16, with the Bitcoin transferred through FalconX. At the reported value, the purchase represents a significant return to spot Bitcoin accumulation for MARA after months in which the company had been selling BTC.

Earlier this year, MARA sold 23,093 BTC worth about $1.63 billion. The sales were linked to the company’s changing strategy as it sought to expand its business beyond Bitcoin mining and into AI-related infrastructure.

MARA’s total Bitcoin holdings are now valued at roughly $2.7 billion at current market prices. The latest purchase has therefore attracted attention from crypto investors, particularly because it represents a sizeable bet on Bitcoin after the company had reduced its holdings.

The purchase also came shortly after the US Senate failed to advance the CLARITY Act, a major crypto market-structure bill. The procedural vote fell short of the 60 votes required to move the legislation forward, adding another layer of uncertainty for the US digital-asset industry.

At the same time, concerns about AI development have been growing. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei recently called for greater caution around the development of frontier AI models.

Other technology leaders, including OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and xAI CEO Elon Musk, have also publicly discussed the potential risks posed by advanced AI. Google DeepMind AGI safety researcher Bilal Chughtai resigned and raised concerns about the possible consequences of uncontrolled AI development.

The warnings have added to investor concerns about the huge spending on AI infrastructure. A slowdown in AI investment could affect companies that have benefited from the boom, including firms supplying computing power and data-centre infrastructure.

Against this backdrop, MARA’s large Bitcoin purchase has drawn fresh attention. While the transaction does not establish a direct connection between AI concerns and the company’s Bitcoin strategy, it highlights MARA’s continued exposure to the crypto market even as it explores opportunities in AI infrastructure.
