Coinbase has quietly started letting users in mainland China register for accounts again. People can now open accounts and verify their identity with passports under Coinbase’s global compliance rules. While Coinbase has not officially announced a return to China, this new onboarding policy is a big change after years of restrictions following China’s crackdown on crypto trading.

Coinbase’s updated customer support documents show that mainland China is now on the list of places where users can register for accounts.

Users in mainland China can now create accounts by verifying their identity with a passport. Unlike in many other regions, they do not need to provide proof of address. However, identity verification is still required before customers can use most account features.

Coinbase said users must verify their identity during registration and from time to time afterward to meet legal, compliance, and fraud prevention rules. The company also reminded users to submit ID documents only through official Coinbase platforms and warned them not to share personal information by email or unofficial channels.

Newly created accounts will have limited functionality until the verification process is completed. Coinbase said most applications are reviewed within 24 hours, while users without access to a desktop camera can continue the verification process using a mobile device by scanning a QR code.

This policy update comes as Coinbase keeps expanding its regulated presence in international markets. Earlier this month, the company got regulatory approval in the United Kingdom to offer stocks and derivatives along with cryptocurrencies, expanding its services beyond digital assets.

Even though account registration has reopened, Coinbase has not said it is actively marketing trading services in mainland China or that Chinese crypto trading rules have changed. Industry observers think this move might just standardize Coinbase’s global onboarding or help Chinese nationals living abroad.

The long-term goal is still unclear, but the updated policy is a big step in expanding account access in one of the world’s most tightly regulated crypto markets. It may also show that Coinbase wants to stay ready for future regulatory changes.
