Coinbase explained that a configuration error in its Kubernetes system caused the 50-minute outage on July 14. The disruption affected retail, institutional, on-chain, and developer services, but Coinbase said customer funds were always safe. The company also announced technical upgrades to prevent this from happening again.
Coinbase’s engineering report said the problem started after a routine update to a shared Kubernetes cluster. The update accidentally disrupted the Istio ingress gateway, which handles network traffic for Coinbase. This stopped incoming traffic and affected several internal services.
Restoring the system was supposed to be simple, but engineers ran into a problem. The tools to fix the issue also depended on the network gateway that was down. The team had to use emergency procedures and manually undo the changes through the cloud provider’s management console with special access.

The outage affected many Coinbase products. Retail customers had delays with trades, deposits, and withdrawals, and Coinbase Card transactions were declined for a while. On-chain swaps on Coinbase DEX for Base and Solana were down. Institutional clients had delays with transfers and settlements, and developers faced interruptions with onboarding, fund transfers, and on-ramp services.
Coinbase fixed the gateway after about 50 minutes, and queued transactions went through in the next few hours. The company said that even though some transactions looked stuck during the outage, they were completed once the system was back up.
To help prevent this from happening again, Coinbase plans to make several upgrades. These include automated checks to avoid Kubernetes conflicts, separating deployment tools from the network parts they control, improving emergency recovery steps, and redesigning core systems for faster automatic rollbacks if something goes wrong.
The July outage came after another major incident in May caused by an AWS cooling failure. These events show that Coinbase faces both outside cloud risks and internal infrastructure challenges as it grows to support more crypto activity.
