According to Coinbase, a configuration issue with their Kubernetes system was the reason for the 50-minute outage on July 14. Despite the disruption affecting retail, institutional, onchain and developer services, Coinbase assured users that their money was always secure. The company also announced technical upgrades to prevent this from happening again.
Coinbase’s engineering report said the problem started after a routine update to a shared Kubernetes cluster. The update accidentally disrupted the Istio ingress gateway, which handles network traffic for Coinbase. This stopped incoming traffic and affected several internal services.
Restoring the system was supposed to be simple, but engineers ran into a problem. The tools to fix the issue also depended on the network gateway that was down. The team had to use emergency procedures and manually undo the changes through the cloud provider’s management console with special access.

The outage affected many Coinbase products. Retail customers had delays with trades, deposits, and withdrawals, and Coinbase Card transactions were declined for a while. On-chain swaps on Coinbase DEX for Base and Solana were down. Developers experienced problems with onboarding, fund transfers, and on-ramp services, while institutional clients experienced delays with transfers and settlements.
After roughly 50 minutes, Coinbase rectified the gateway, and over the following few hours, queued transactions were completed. According to the firm, even though some transactions appeared to be stuck during the outage, they were finished as soon as the system was restored.
