In addition to its current crypto licences, cryptocurrency exchange Gate has obtained a Payment Institution licence in Malta, which is granted under the PSD2 framework of the European Union. This licence gives the exchange a regulated foothold to provide payment services throughout the bloc.
The company announced on Thursday that the Malta Financial Services Authority (MFSA) had granted the licence to Gate Technology, its Malta-based subsidiary.
According to Gate, the permission is in line with its plan to integrate Web3 services with conventional payment infrastructure in Europe.
The authorisation expands Gate’s current EU crypto rights to include payment capabilities. Gate declared on October 1, 2025, that it has acquired a licence under the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation, which permits it to offer custody and exchange services throughout member states.
Cryptocurrency businesses in the EU that provide stablecoin payment services are required to be authorised as either Payment Institutions or Electronic Money Institutions.
Gate can extend beyond trading into fiat and stablecoin payment infrastructure with PSD2 approval, enabling passport-regulated payment services within the bloc.
