Crypto infrastructure firm BitGo (BTGO) is set to replace LayerZero with Chainlink as the exclusive cross-chain provider for wrapped bitcoin (WBTC). The move boosts the value covered by disclosed LayerZero-to-Chainlink migrations to approximately $15 billion.
The action is a part of a migration wave that began earlier this year in response to the $292 million exploit of Kelp DAO’s LayerZero-powered bridge, which raised concerns about LayerZero bridge configurations. Various other projects, including Mantle, Kelp, Lombard, Solv Protocol, Virtuals, Re and Kraken have since announced moves to Chainlink’s CCIP.

After a rigorous review, BitGo deprecated its legacy bridging provider & chose CCIP as its exclusive cross-chain infra given it’s the only solution that meets institutional security requirements. https://t.co/ceIBKawZm8 pic.twitter.com/oEYtZtNuFU

WBTC is a tokenized representation of bitcoin designed to track its value. Unlike native bitcoin, it can be used in decentralized finance applications on other blockchains for trading, lending and collateral.
According to CoinMarketCap, WBTC’s market capitalization is presently about $7.4 billion. The total amount of money moving their cross-chain infrastructure to CCIP is approximately $14.6 billion when it is combined with the $7.24 billion covered by previous migration announcements.
BitGo announced it will standardize WBTC deployments using Chainlink’s Cross-Chain Token standard and utilize CCIP by default for future assets it releases.

Because of the structure, BitGo is able to maintain control over its token contracts, establish rate limitations, and impose other restrictions on transfers across blockchains.
In order to extend WBTC across blockchains, BitGo chose LayerZero in 2024. At first, it was used for installations on Avalanche and BNB Chain. Each cross-chain transfer had to be approved by either LayerZero or Polyhedra and BitGo’s own validator.
Chainlink’s directory already lists CCIP-enabled WBTC pools on Ethereum and Ronin. The announcement did not specify when the broader migration will be completed.
