AI Cameras Helps Nab Drivers Breaking Safety Rules
In its first three days of operation, an AI camera system caught nearly 300 law-breaking drivers, 117 mobile phone offenses, and 180 seat belt violations. The system, which was initially tested last year, aims to send a clear message to drivers who continue using their phones behind the wheel, ensuring they are caught. Adrian Leisk, head of road safety for Devon and Cornwall Police, stated that the technology will help enforce basic road safety laws.
The UK’s A30 uses high-speed AI cameras, infra-red flashes, and advanced filtering to capture clear images of vehicles. Human review ensures accuracy, and identified images are anonymized and confirmed. Drivers are issued warning letters or notices of prosecution based on severity. The technology aims to enhance road safety while maintaining fairness. India imposes challans for mobile phone usage and seat belt neglect, but uses direct police observations instead of sophisticated cameras.
