  • A stablecoin-backed Visa card for regular purchases is introduced by MoneyGram. Before entering other markets, the MoneyGram Card will first be available in Colombia.
  • Circle’s USDC will be used for the card; MoneyGram’s MGUSD stablecoin will be supported in the future.
  • Wherever Visa is accepted, users can use their digital dollar balance both online and in physical stores.
  • PaymentScan data shows that stablecoin card spending exceeded $1.1 billion in August.

MoneyGram is making stablecoins more practical for use with the introduction of a new Visa card. This card lets customers hold a balance in U.S. Dollars and spend it anywhere Visa is accepted.

The MoneyGram Card will start in Colombia. Move into other markets soon after. People can get the card through the MoneyGram app, add it to wallets like Apple Pay or Google Pay and use it for both online and in-store shopping. At launch, the card will run on Circle’s USDC stablecoin. MoneyGram plans to support its own stablecoin, MGUSD, in the future.

Another useful feature is the ability to send money to themselves. They can then pick up the funds in currency at MoneyGram locations. This connects digital dollar balances with the company’s network of cash pickup points.

Physical Card & ATM Support Planned

MoneyGram said a physical version of the card is expected later this year, with ATM withdrawals also planned.

The product was built in collaboration with Rain, a company that specializes in stablecoin payments, Crossmint, which provides wallet infrastructure and the Stellar blockchain. This partnership brings together MoneyGram’s remittance network and modern blockchain payment systems.

Anthony Soohoo, the CEO of MoneyGram, said the card aims to help customers have freedom and control over how they handle their money.

This launch shows that MoneyGram is expanding its plans to use stablecoin technology within its money-transfer services.

Stablecoins Move Beyond Crypto Trading

Stablecoins are being used more and more for payments, remittances and cross‑border transfers of just for trading in crypto markets.

Card‑based products could speed this change by letting users spend balances on familiar payment networks without merchants having to handle digital assets directly.

Stablecoin card spending is already growing. Stablecoin volume passed $1.1 billion in August, according to PaymentScan data showing demand for crypto‑linked payment products.

MoneyGram says its network reaches more than 60 million active customers in over 200 countries and territories with nearly 500,000 retail locations. That footprint could give the company a distribution channel as stablecoin‑based payments grow.

MoneyGram Builds Its Stablecoin Strategy

The new card follows MoneyGram’s recent expansion into dollar-backed digital assets.

The company unveiled MGUSD on the Stellar network, with the stablecoin issued by Bridge, the stablecoin infrastructure company owned by Stripe.

MoneyGram has also been named as a partner in Open USD, a Stripe-led stablecoin initiative designed to share revenue with participating backers.
