Ethena has launched Ethena Pay, a new mobile payments application that allows users to hold, transfer and spend its USDe synthetic dollar. The app uses the Avalanche blockchain for its infrastructure and integrates Visa for payments. Its beta version is available on iOS across nearly 50 countries, with more markets expected to follow.

The launch gives USDe a new use case beyond trading, collateral and decentralised finance, bringing the dollar-denominated digital asset into a more familiar payments environment.

Ethena Pay is designed to make blockchain transactions largely invisible to users. Instead of managing onchain transactions directly, users can interact with USDe through the mobile application.

The app allows users to hold USDe, transfer funds and make payments. Through the Visa integration, the payment experience can connect with Visa’s existing merchant network. The company also says the service supports movement between fiat currencies and USDe.

This approach gives USDe a different role from its traditional use in crypto markets. Until now, the asset has mainly been used for trading, as collateral and across decentralised finance applications. Ethena Pay is designed to test whether the asset can also become part of everyday payments.

Avalanche provides the blockchain infrastructure behind the application, with USDe transfers recorded onchain. For users, however, the experience is intended to feel closer to a conventional mobile payments application.

The launch also adds another element to Ethena’s wider effort to connect USDe with traditional financial infrastructure. The company has previously reported more than $30 billion in cumulative activity through its mint and redemption systems, while USDe has been integrated across more than 100 platforms and protocols. Those figures relate to the wider USDe ecosystem and do not represent activity on Ethena Pay.

The payments app creates a different kind of demand. Users can potentially spend USDe on purchases or transfer it to other people instead of limiting their use of the asset to crypto-native platforms.

Ethena has also been building connections with established financial institutions. In June, the company announced an integration involving BlackRock’s BUIDL fund and the Aladdin ecosystem. In January, Kraken Institutional announced a partnership with Ethena Labs involving segregated cold-storage custody and weekly proof-of-reserves reporting for assets associated with the USDe system.

USDe itself has a structure that differs from traditional fiat-backed stablecoins such as USDC and USDT. It uses collateral and hedging strategies to maintain its dollar-denominated value rather than relying primarily on bank deposits.

The move into consumer payments brings a new set of requirements. Reliable transactions, competitive costs, merchant acceptance and regulatory compliance will all be important as the service expands.

Ethena has said it plans to enter additional markets, including the United States and European Union, although those launches are planned for the future.

For now, Ethena Pay represents an important shift for USDe. The asset is moving beyond its traditional crypto uses and into a consumer-facing payments application, with Avalanche providing the blockchain layer and Visa connecting the service to an established payments network.
