Coinbase has launched tokenized US stocks on its Base blockchain, bringing shares of Apple, Nvidia, Meta and Alphabet onchain for eligible investors outside the US. The launch also includes Chainlink price feeds, which provide continuous market data for the tokenized shares.

The tokens are issued on Base using Coinbase’s B20 framework and represent direct claims on underlying shares held 1:1 with regulated broker and custodian Alpaca. The move puts Coinbase alongside exchanges such as Kraken and Binance in the race to bring traditional equities onto blockchain networks.

The tokenized stocks are being issued under Abu Dhabi Global Market (ADGM) regulation, where Coinbase has established its international tokenization hub. The company said more stocks are expected to be added in the coming weeks.

Unlike some tokenized equity products, Coinbase says its tokens represent a direct claim on the underlying shares. Institutional market makers purchase the actual stocks, which are then held by Alpaca in a bankruptcy-remote structure supervised by the ADGM financial regulator.

The tokens are designed to reflect corporate actions such as dividends and stock splits. Once issued, they can be moved between wallets without a whitelist. Eligible investors can also hold them in self-custody wallets and trade them around the clock on supported onchain platforms, including decentralized exchange Aerodrome.

The addition of Chainlink price feeds is an important part of the launch. Chainlink will provide continuous pricing for the tokenized stocks, allowing DeFi applications to use them in lending markets, decentralized exchanges and other financial products.

That could open up uses beyond simple stock trading. For example, tokenized Nvidia shares could potentially be used as collateral for a loan on Aave, while tokenized Apple shares could be supplied to a decentralized exchange. The idea is to make traditional stocks work within the wider blockchain-based financial system.

According to Chainlink documentation, the price feeds use the underlying stock price along with a Coinbase-supplied multiplier that accounts for dividends and other corporate actions.

Coinbase’s move comes as tokenization gains momentum across financial markets. Banks and asset managers have already brought tens of billions of dollars of US Treasuries, private credit and investment funds onchain. Citi has estimated that the market for tokenized securities could reach $5.5 trillion by 2030.

The tokenized stock market itself is also expanding. RWA.xyz data shows that tokenized stocks were worth about $2.48 billion, up 5.2% over the previous 30 days. Monthly transfer volume had reached $27.28 billion, while the number of holders had crossed 2.1 million.

For Coinbase, the launch represents another step toward connecting traditional markets with crypto infrastructure. If more stocks are added and DeFi platforms adopt them, tokenized equities could become more than a new way to trade shares. They could become building blocks for a broader onchain financial market.
