  • The new Zakura Common cryptography stack has the potential to greatly speed up Zcash private transactions. According to Zakura, mobile proof generation can become more than 14 times faster, sometimes falling from more than three seconds to less than 200 milliseconds.
  • The creation of desktop proofs can be enhanced by almost five times.
  • With the upgraded libraries, Zcash transaction hashing is supposedly over 21 times faster. Private Zcash transactions can be verified by full nodes four to eight times more quickly.

Zcash developers have introduced a new cryptography stack designed to make private transactions significantly faster, potentially cutting wallet proof-generation times from more than three seconds to under 200 milliseconds in some cases.

The software, called Zakura Common, was developed by the team behind Zakura, a new Zcash node launched in July as part of efforts to improve the blockchain’s performance and support faster private payments.

Zakura Common Speeds Up Zcash Privacy Transactions

Private Zcash transactions, also known as shielded transactions, protect the sender, receiver and transaction amount. However, this privacy requires wallets to perform complex cryptographic calculations before a transaction can be submitted to the network.

According to Zakura, its new libraries can make this process more than 14 times faster on mobile devices and more than five times faster on desktop computers.

The performance improvements extend beyond proof generation. Zakura says hashing can become more than 21 times faster, while full nodes can verify private transactions between four and eight times faster.

Zcash cofounder Sean Bowe highlighted the broader impact, noting that both shielded wallets and full nodes can benefit from the new cryptographic stack.

No Zcash Network Upgrade Required

One of the key advantages of Zakura Common is that wallet developers do not need to wait for a protocol upgrade to use the new technology.

The libraries are the source and can be used in wallets that work on the current Zcash network. Zakura has already started using the system in version 1.3.0. Vizor Wallet is one of the wallets to add to it.

The changes might make private Zcash payments seem quicker by cutting down the time people wait for their devices to build transactions.

Zcash Scaling Efforts Target 50,000 TPS

The long-term objective of Zakura’s developers at launch was to handle over 50,000 private transactions per second, which would be comparable to the size of large payment networks.

The broader scaling strategy targets several bottlenecks, including transaction verification, wallet synchronization, and the amount of blockchain data wallets need to process.

Zakura Common addresses another important bottleneck by reducing the computational workload required to create private transactions.

Zakura also said wallets could benefit from faster synchronization, while full nodes may process transactions more efficiently and reduce orphaned blocks. The software is also designed to support the proposed 25-second block times for Zcash’s next major upgrade, NU7.
