“There is a future where crypto takes over the world, and there is also a future where it’s merging with TradFi one way or another” https://t.co/lM657QoetB

According to a report from Bloomberg, Wintermute really wants to make money from crypto markets. By the end of 2027, Wintermute wants more than half of its money to come from these crypto markets. Now Wintermute gets only about ten percent of its money from these markets.
Crypto Trading Activity Slows
The company used to trade around $15 billion every day in 2025. Now it trades around $10 billion every day in 2026. Bitcoin was worth around $126,000 in October. Now it is worth less. The decrease in people trading cryptocurrency is happening at the time that Bitcoin is declining in value. Wintermute and Bitcoin are still important even if Wintermute and Bitcoin are not as busy as they used to be.
In the first half of 2026, a record 72% of spot trading activity on Wintermute’s over-the-counter desk came from institutional investors. This demonstrates that even though overall trading activity has decreased, big investors still have a significant impact on the cryptocurrency market.
AI & Data Centers At The Core
The planned investment will help Wintermute build the technology needed to compete in traditional markets. The company plans to use large amounts of market data to train quantitative trading models.
It also expects to increase its computing, storage, and networking capacity. Wintermute is entering a market dominated by major trading firms such as Jane Street, Citadel Securities, and XTX Markets.
XTX Markets has already announced plans to spend about €1 billion on five data centers in Finland. Jane Street is also preparing to build and finance its own data center.
Wintermute Expands Its Market Reach
Wintermute has already started moving into new areas. In 2025, it began trading exchange-traded funds and perpetual futures linked to real-world assets.
The company also started letting people buy and sell West Texas Intermediate oil at any time of day in March. They also opened a part of the business that makes predictions about the market earlier this year.
Its affiliate, in the United States, recently got permission to be a broker-dealer, which means it can now buy and sell stocks and stock options. The company can also work with exchange-traded funds as a participant.
A Bigger Push Beyond Crypto
Wintermute’s $1 billion investment shows how major crypto firms are looking to build businesses outside digital assets.
By combining AI, high-speed trading systems, and large data centers, the company aims to compete directly with established Wall Street firms.
