Instead of distributing capital throughout the larger market, institutions are concentrating liquidity into fewer tokens.

This week, Wintermute revealed that institutional investors accounted for 72% of their spot OTC cryptocurrency activity in the first half of 2026, up from 59% the previous year.

The group claims that professional investors are changing the bitcoin markets by employing derivatives, concentrating on fewer assets, and lessening the extreme price swings that were traditionally associated with public trading.

According to Wintermute’s 1H26 OTC report, 72% of the spot flow on its desk between January and June came from institutional counterparties, such as hedge funds, digital asset treasuries, asset managers, and family offices. This percentage increased from 61% in the second half of 2025 to 59% in the first half.

The business noted that institutional engagement has grown to the point where it may affect token performance and market direction. It stated that “institutions are now the clear drivers of Wintermute’s OTC flow” and that their trading practices are altering the distribution of liquidity in the cryptocurrency market.

Institutions are continuing to concentrate on a narrower set of tokens, which is one significant change. Institutional counterparties only saw a 24% rise in the quantity of unique tokens exchanged between the first half of 2024 and the first half of 2026, but regular traders saw a 76% increase.

According to Wintermute, the rise has led to a market where liquidity is concentrated in fewer assets. Additionally, institutional investors have increased their exposure to derivatives. As investors employed options techniques to create income, the notional volume of altcoin options on Wintermute’s desk increased 3.4 times between the second half of 2025 and the first half of 2026.

Bitcoin’s realized volatility decreased from about 70% in 2025 to roughly 45% now, according to the analysis, which also connected institutional engagement to reduced volatility.
