Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin says Bitcoin can respond to many AI-driven cybersecurity threats without requiring broad social consensus, arguing that routine software or mining-pool updates can deal with technical vulnerabilities. Buterin said threats involving Bitcoin’s software or infrastructure can generally be addressed through standard updates, while more fundamental changes to the network would require wider agreement. He also argued that breaking Bitcoin’s core cryptography remains highly unlikely with today’s technology.
Buterin’s remarks coincided with a rising debate about whether the security of well-established blockchain networks may someday be threatened by the quick development of artificial intelligence.

Buterin drew a distinction between technical vulnerabilities and fundamental changes to a blockchain’s rules. In his view, many technical problems can be addressed by developers and mining pools through normal software updates without requiring every participant in the network to agree.
That does not mean Bitcoin can simply ignore consensus. Major changes to the network’s rules are a different matter. Those changes can require coordination among developers, miners, businesses and users.
Buterin also pushed back against concerns that AI could soon break Bitcoin’s fundamental cryptography. Bitcoin relies on cryptographic systems that are considered secure against currently available computing technology.
Another long-term concern is quantum computing. Powerful quantum computers could eventually threaten some of the cryptographic techniques used across the digital-asset industry. However, such a threat is not considered an immediate practical problem.
As a safeguard, the cryptocurrency industry is already considering post-quantum cryptography. The goal is to create cryptography techniques that could be resistant against upcoming quantum computers.
Buterin has already emphasized the potential dual role of AI in blockchain security. The same technologies that might increase the sophistication of cyberattacks may also assist programmers in finding vulnerabilities and validating software.
One area attracting particular attention is formal verification. This involves using mathematical methods to check whether software behaves according to its specifications. For blockchain systems, where a coding mistake can result in significant financial losses, such techniques could become increasingly valuable.
Bitcoin’s long history also provides some reassurance to supporters. The network has operated for years despite repeated predictions of major attacks or technical failure.
