NBA star LeBron James has announced a new partnership with prediction-market platform Polymarket, although the details of the project have not yet been revealed. James posted a short video on X showing an elevator with buttons labelled politics, crypto, sports, the economy, culture, weather, esports and technology. He selected sports, after which the video displayed the Polymarket logo and the words “COMING SOON.”

Neither James nor Polymarket has explained exactly what the partnership will involve. The announcement does not give a launch date or say whether “Polymarket HQ” refers to a new product, a media project, a physical location or a marketing campaign.

James’ role in the project is also unclear for now. What is certain is that the basketball superstar is entering into a commercial relationship with a prediction-market company at a time when these platforms are becoming increasingly involved in sports.

Polymarket has been expanding beyond its traditional political prediction-market image. Sports have become an important area of interest for the industry, attracting both traders and major personalities.

The timing is notable because James’ own career has already generated substantial prediction-market activity. Contracts linked to his free-agency decision reportedly generated about $273 million in combined trading volume across Kalshi and Polymarket.

That trading activity was unrelated to the new partnership, but it shows why a major sports figure such as James could be valuable to a prediction-market platform. His enormous global following gives Polymarket an opportunity to reach audiences far beyond the traditional crypto and finance communities.

James previously had a multi-year talent ambassador agreement with DraftKings, signed in 2024. His spokesperson has said that agreement has since expired.

The new Polymarket relationship has already attracted mixed reactions online. Some followers questioned why James would associate himself with a prediction-market company, while others defended the partnership as a normal commercial arrangement.

The debate reflects a larger controversy surrounding prediction markets and professional sports. Companies such as Polymarket and rival Kalshi have increasingly offered contracts connected to sporting events and outcomes.

Supporters describe these products as financial markets that allow participants to trade on future events. Critics argue that sports-related contracts can look very similar to traditional sports betting.

That distinction has become especially important in the United States, where state gambling authorities and prediction-market operators have disagreed over how sports contracts should be regulated.
