  • To combat global cryptocurrency scammers and cyber-enabled investment fraud, the US and the UK form a collaborative cooperation.
  • Authorities from the US and the UK will exchange intelligence and carry out concurrent investigations into shared criminal targets.
  • Early in October, a private sector disruption operation is scheduled in London to aid in the dismantling of scam networks.

The United States and the United Kingdom have announced a joint law enforcement alliance. The United States and the United Kingdom want the alliance to dismantle scam centers that are connected to cryptocurrency and to cyber-enabled investment fraud.

The agreement brings together the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, the Crown Prosecution Service of England and Wales and the UK National Crime Agency, collaborating to fight fraud.

The agencies signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) designed to strengthen cooperation against international criminal networks operating scam centers.

The US Department of Justice described the agreement as a “first-of-its-kind” international partnership focused on disrupting global scam operations.

Under the agreement, US and UK authorities will conduct parallel investigations into shared targets, exchange intelligence on organized crime groups and coordinate decisions over where specific cases should be prosecuted. Authorities have already identified overlapping investigations and are preparing an in-person disruption operation with private-sector partners in London in early October.

The partnership happens at a time when cryptocurrency investment fraud is still causing financial losses in the United States. According to the DOJ, the money lost and reported to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center went up by 89% to $8.65 billion in 2025. This is much higher than the $4.57 billion lost in 2023.

Crypto Scam Centers Face Growing International Pressure

The new alliance expands the work of the Scam Center Strike Force, launched in November 2025 by US Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro. The initiative focuses on Chinese organized crime networks operating scam centers, particularly across Southeast Asia.

According to US authorities, these operations often mix crypto investment scams with money laundering and human trafficking. Criminal groups regularly use investment platforms to trick people into sending money. This makes international cooperation more important than ever.

The US task force brings together agencies like the FBI, the US Secret Service, the IRS Criminal Investigation division and Homeland Security Investigations. It also partners with the Treasury and State departments, along with private-sector companies to break up networks and get stolen funds back.

Working across borders has already led to results in fighting crypto scams. In April, a joint effort led by Dubai police involved the FBI and China’s Ministry of Public Security. That operation led to 276 arrests. Shut down at least nine alleged crypto scam centers.

At the time governments in Southeast Asia are making their punishments stronger for digital asset fraud. Myanmar’s parliament passed laws in July that could mean long prison sentences, for those involved in cryptocurrency scams.
