The US government has moved 12,267 Bitcoin worth around $1.01 billion from wallets linked to the 2016 Bitfinex hack. The transfer took place on Thursday, according to blockchain intelligence firm Arkham. The Bitcoin was moved to new wallet addresses, but there was no sign that the government had sold the coins. No transfer to a cryptocurrency exchange was recorded in this transaction. This suggests that the move may have been a routine change in how the government stores its seized Bitcoin rather than an attempt to sell it.

The latest transfer comes after other large cryptocurrency movements involving wallets linked to the US government. Approximately 3,200 Bitcoin worth $264 million and $119 million in USDT, were deposited into addresses associated with Coinbase Prime on Wednesday. According to Arkham, the money originated from wallets linked to the Bitfinex seizure and the FTX and Alameda Research cases.

There were also reports on Wednesday of more than $100 million worth of Bitcoin and BNB moving in a similar manner. Earlier, in July, around $288 million in seized Bitcoin and Ether was routed to Coinbase Prime through newly created intermediary wallets.

However, transfers to Coinbase Prime do not automatically mean that the government is selling its cryptocurrency. Additionally, the platform provides custody services that let organizations safely keep their digital assets. As a result, these movements by themselves are insufficient to verify that a sale has occurred.

The US government has also outlined its plans for seized Bitcoin. In March 2025, an executive order directed that forfeited Bitcoin should be placed in a Strategic Bitcoin Reserve. It also stated that the Bitcoin held in the reserve should not be sold.

According to Arkham’s data, the US government still holds around $25.5 billion worth of cryptocurrency. This makes it one of the largest government holders of digital assets.

For now, the movement of $1.01 billion in Bitcoin has not provided clear evidence of a sale. Investors and market watchers will likely continue to track government-linked wallets to understand whether these transfers are simply changes in storage arrangements or part of a larger plan for managing seized cryptocurrency.
