UBS has significantly increased its exposure to Bitcoin through call options linked to BlackRock’s iShares Bitcoin Trust, or IBIT, highlighting the growing role of cryptocurrency derivatives within traditional finance.
According to regulatory filings, UBS increased its call option exposure to IBIT by more than 24-fold during the second quarter. The options represented approximately 1.95 million underlying IBIT shares at the end of June, compared with around 80,000 shares three months earlier.
The bank also increased its direct IBIT holdings by around 12%. UBS held 407,890 IBIT shares at the end of Q2, compared with 364,371 shares at the end of Q1. The direct position was worth approximately $13.6M.
At the same time, UBS reduced its put option exposure. The bank’s puts represented around 143,300 underlying IBIT shares, down from approximately 303,300 shares at the end of March.
The sharp increase in call options has attracted attention because call options can provide exposure to potential upside in an underlying asset. However, the filing does not disclose all the details needed to determine the bank’s exact market view.
It is also unclear whether the positions were established for UBS itself, its clients, market-making operations or hedging strategies. Banks frequently hold derivatives for a combination of these purposes, so the size of the options position alone should not automatically be interpreted as a direct bullish Bitcoin bet.
Nevertheless, the development demonstrates how Bitcoin is becoming increasingly integrated into traditional financial markets. Institutional participation is no longer limited to simply purchasing spot Bitcoin ETFs. Banks and professional investors can now use options and other derivatives to manage exposure, hedge risk or implement more complex investment strategies.
UBS has also been expanding its digital-asset services. The bank’s activity comes as global financial institutions increasingly offer clients access to regulated cryptocurrency products.
The rise in Bitcoin ETF derivatives is particularly significant because spot ETFs have created a regulated bridge between traditional portfolios and the cryptocurrency market. UBS’s latest filing therefore provides another example of how Bitcoin is moving deeper into conventional financial infrastructure.
