Just six months after receiving $70 million at a $1 billion valuation, blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs has increased its valuation to $2 billion after an additional investment round from current investors. With a new platform anticipated to launch in November, the firm is now getting ready to grow into AI-powered investigations. According to TRM, as digital crime gets more complex, investor interest in fusing blockchain intelligence with AI is expanding.

TRM defined its most recent financing round as a modest investment that came only from current donors, although it did not provide the exact amount. Goldman Sachs, Bessemer Venture Partners, Y Combinator, Thoma Bravo, and Galaxy Ventures were among the investors in the company’s previous $70 million Series C investment, which was headed by Blockchain Capital.

According to the business, the most recent financing takes TRM’s total fundraising to almost $220 million over seven rounds. The company anticipates exceeding $100 million in recurring income in a matter of weeks, according to CEO Esteban Castaño. With operations in London, Singapore, and Washington, D.C., TRM now employs about 500 people.

The boost in valuation occurs at a crucial juncture for the company. Recently, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) awarded TRM a contract for over $95 million for blockchain analytics and crypto-tracing capabilities utilized in investigations. Following market research, a sole-source procurement procedure was used to award the contract.

Chainalysis, a rival blockchain analytics firm, has filed a federal court appeal to the procurement ruling, claiming that the ICE award was irrational and arbitrary. These accusations, however, do not prove that ICE or TRM violated any procurement regulations.

The disagreement brings to light the increasing rivalry between Chainalysis and TRM for institutional and governmental contracts. According to data supplied by the firm, Chainalysis continues to be a bigger and more reputable player, providing services to over 1,500 organizations.

TRM’s next major step will be its planned AI investigations platform. The company says the product will focus on crimes involving artificial intelligence, including AI-enabled fraud, deepfakes, sextortion and child sexual abuse material.

TRM believes the connection between crypto and online crime is becoming increasingly important for investigators. Criminal groups can use cryptocurrency across multiple types of illegal activity, potentially allowing blockchain data to help investigators connect different parts of a case.

The company also says AI has lowered some of the technical barriers involved in fraud and manipulation, allowing certain criminal activities to be carried out faster and at greater scale.

The planned AI platform would therefore take TRM beyond investigations centred primarily on blockchain transactions. It could put the company into competition with firms working in cybersecurity, fraud detection and other investigative software.

TRM’s business is benefiting from a wider increase in crypto-related crime and the demand for blockchain intelligence. The company and its competitors provide tools used by government agencies, financial institutions and crypto businesses to investigate scams, money laundering, sanctions evasion, hacks and other illicit activity.

For now, however, the $2 billion valuation reflects investor expectations rather than the proven performance of TRM’s AI strategy. The November launch, future customer adoption and the outcome of the ICE procurement dispute will provide a clearer picture of the company’s next phase.
