- Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei urged G7 leaders to strengthen global AI cooperation and warned democratic nations against AI fragmentation.
- OpenAI CEO Sam Altman backed Amodei’s call for unified AI standards, emphasizing the need to expand access to cybersecurity and cyberdefense tools.
- Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis joined Anthropic and OpenAI in advocating for a U.S.-led framework for AI governance and technical standards.
- French President Emmanuel Macron warned that abrupt restrictions on advanced AI systems could undermine trust among allies and hurt U.S. companies leading the AI race.
Following the U.S. export ban on Anthropic’s latest AI model, CEO Dario Amodei urged G7 leaders to work together on developing and managing advanced AI technologies.
Anthropic, the company behind the Claude family of AI models, focuses on building safe and reliable artificial intelligence systems. Dario called on G7 leaders to collaborate on advanced AI technologies during a summit in Évian-les-Bains, France, on Wednesday. He received support from Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT and one of the world’s leading AI developers.
Demis Hassabis, CEO & Co- founder of Google DeepMind, joined the appeal for U.S.-led cooperation on AI development, pointing out dangers including cybersecurity and bioterrorism if democratic allies broke apart. Both Hassabis and Altman suggested an evaluation forum led by the United States and a technical standards body.
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei Urges G7 Nations To Resist AI Fragmentation
Amodei urged democratic nations to cooperate and “resist the temptation to splinter” over the release of cutting-edge technologies, but she also expressed empathy for governments’ desire to prevent AI exploitation. Altman emphasized the necessity of giving all current nations access to cyberdefense tools.
The Anthropic disagreement has raised the stakes for the United States and its G7 allies, as admitted by French President Emmanuel Macron. He cautioned that if the United States were to abruptly “turn off the switch,” it may harm American businesses at the forefront of the AI race. Macron issued a warning against “non-cooperation among democracies” and demanded “stronger regulation of artificial intelligence.”
Sam Altman Calls Anthropic’s Claude Mythos Campaign ‘Fear-based Marketing’
Altman and Amodei have a long-standing, strong competition. During a group shot at the India AI Impact Summit in February, both CEOs made headlines by raising their fists rather than shaking hands. This moment swiftly went viral amid their intensifying rivalry.
Prior to that, Sam Altman called Anthropic’s Super Bowl commercial “deceptive” since it suggested OpenAI might utilize personal information for marketing. Paul Smith, an executive of Anthropic, seemed to make fun of OpenAI by claiming that Anthropic was not vying for users’ attention or advertising revenue.
Even Anthropic’s marketing of its cybersecurity-focused Claude Mythos was criticized by Altman, who called it “fear-based marketing” that encouraged restricting access to powerful AI to a select few customers.
Anthropic Shuts Down Fable 5 & Mythos 5 Following U.S. National Security Order
The G7 nations’ campaign for unity follows Anthropic’s unexpected shutdown of its Fable 5 and Mythos 5 AI models in response to a US government order citing national security concerns.
Anthropic completely shut down the models as a result of the injunction, which was issued last Friday and prohibited foreign nationals from utilizing the systems.
Andy Jassy, the CEO of Amazon.com Inc., is said to have contributed to the prohibition. He allegedly told Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent that Amazon researchers were using the Fable 5 model to gather data that may be used in cyberattacks, which led to the models’ worldwide deactivation.
Anthropic’s competitor, OpenAI, is purportedly under investigation in multiple states for its data practices and safety procedures ahead of its planned IPO.
Documents on advertising, user engagement and retention, data privacy procedures, activities with children and seniors, AI models, AI sycophancy, and internal corporate policies are sought in a subpoena issued by the office of New York Attorney General Letitia James.
