A pseudonymous crypto market researcher, SMQKE, has suggested that the XRP and XLM tokens represent complementary blockchain-based payment ecosystems in development to carve out a sizeable niche in the institutional cross-border payments space akin to the relationship between payment processors Visa and Mastercard.

Per the researcher, the two blockchains’ use cases, which were initially focused on enabling fast and cheap money transfers through their native tokens, XRP and XLM, are set to gain further adoption as critical enablers for the next-gen financial settlement protocols instead of being “speculative assets.”

“The analyst stated that both networks were built to facilitate fast and cheap international money transfers and that the two projects were “designed to serve different functions and serve as a multi-chain financial ecosystem, not to compete against each other.’ According to SMQKE, Ripple (XRP) and Stellar (XLM) are expected to operate as separate but closely related protocols for financial markets in the future.

The analyst added that while Ripple would be used for institutional banking corridors, cross-border settlements, and liquidity provisioning, Stellar would be focused on remittances, financial inclusion, light-weighting asset issuance, and tokenized real-world assets,” the report stated, noting that there is an increased institutional demand for settlement solutions.

SMQKE noted that the dynamics around the blockchain-based financial market infrastructure are changing rapidly, given that custodians, banks, payment providers, and other market participants are looking to settle more transactions in quicker time frames while cutting costs and complying with tightening regulations.

“Settlement-focused tokenization developments continue to gather momentum across the industry as critical enablers for the next-gen financial settlement protocols, which have been designed to complement existing infrastructures rather than replace them,” the analyst added. “In addition, both Ripple (XRP) and Stellar (XLM) tokens have appeared on the FXC Intelligence’s 2026 Top 100 Cross-Border Payments Companies list, suggesting that they have already gained institutional recognition as critical enablers for the future of finance.”

SMQKE concluded that the analyst’s views on the future of XRP and XLM tokens reflect a general trend in the market in which blockchain-based settlement networks are increasingly being embraced by institutional investors, businesses, and individual consumers for their ability to disrupt traditional finance and enable cheaper and faster cross-border payments compared to the legacy SWIFT system.

It is still unclear, however, whether the projection will become a self-fulfilling prophecy, given that there is no indication of such a scenario at present.
