Polygon co-founder Sandeep Nailwal has announced the launch of a crypto donation platform, which is intended to help raise money for disaster relief in Nepal. The founder has created a portal called Nepal Relief to help people donate digital coins or tokens to the cause of helping Nepal recover from the recent floods and disaster.

The platform supports cryptocurrency donations across multiple blockchain networks. Contributions are routed through Polygon’s infrastructure and converted into USDC before being directed toward the Government of Nepal’s Prime Minister Disaster Relief Fund. At the time of reporting, the initiative had already attracted more than $167,000 in donations.

Polygon’s Open Money Stack provides the underlying infrastructure for routing, bridging and conversion. The system is intended to reduce the friction associated with sending cryptocurrency from different blockchain networks while creating a more transparent process for tracking funds.

One of the key features of the initiative is the ability to verify transactions onchain. Unlike conventional donation systems where information about individual transfers may not be publicly accessible, blockchain-based contributions can be tracked through publicly available transaction records. This allows donors and other observers to follow the movement of funds.

The case is one of the practical applications that are being explored for blockchain technology for purposes beyond speculation. The use of digital assets facilitates international transfers of money without relying entirely on the banking system, and the funds can reach their destination faster.

For Polygon, the case is also significant as it promotes the company’s interest in payment and financial infrastructure. The use of stablecoins such as USDC helps in reducing the risks associated with the volatility of cryptocurrencies while still benefiting from the settlement efficiency of blockchain technology.

The case is an illustration of how governments, companies and blockchain entities are considering stablecoins and decentralized infrastructure for making cross-border payments, donations and other humanitarian support.
