Poland’s parliament has approved President Karol Nawrocki’s veto of a bill regulating cryptocurrencies and crypto assets because the lower house of Parliament did not muster the three-fifths majority to override the veto. The Sejm voted 241-198.
The defunct bill would have imposed stricter rules on cryptocurrency businesses. The draft law would have also given the Polish Financial Supervision Authority more power and control over crypto firms.

The vote comes at a sensitive time for Poland’s crypto industry, with authorities also dealing with developments surrounding collapsed exchange Zondacrypto. The exchange’s Estonian operator, BB Trade Estonia, entered bankruptcy proceedings in August. Polish authorities are investigating allegations connected to the company’s operations, including suspected fraud and money laundering.
The regulatory debate illustrates the challenges facing European jurisdictions as they adapt domestic crypto frameworks to broader European rules. The European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets regulation, or MiCA, has established a common framework for many crypto businesses, but individual countries continue to determine how certain supervisory and enforcement responsibilities are implemented locally.
The failed override leaves Poland’s regulatory framework facing additional uncertainty. Crypto companies may now have to navigate existing rules while lawmakers reconsider how domestic oversight should evolve.
For the industry, stronger regulation could potentially provide greater certainty for compliant businesses while increasing reporting and operational requirements. Consumer protection and regulation have become a hot topic in recent months after a number of crypto firms collapsed and got investigated here in Europe.
The case of Zondacrypto has made it abundantly clear why this issue needs to get addressed immediately. Whether Poland will eventually introduce a new crypto regulation will probably depend on how the legislative and regulatory authorities as well as the president himself will react.
