OKX, a global crypto exchange, has launched Exchange OS, a new platform that lets users and institutions build custom crypto trading markets directly on-chain. The system supports spot trading, perpetual futures and prediction markets, giving builders more flexibility in how trading venues work.
Exchange OS runs on OKX’s Ethereum Layer-2 network, X Layer, and uses the same technology as the exchange’s current trading engine. OKX founder and CEO Star Xu said the goal is to fix the fragmented crypto trading infrastructure.
The rollout will take place in three phases. At first, selected partners will get access to build markets, with public access expected later in 2026. One of the first planned applications is a prediction market tied to the FIFA World Cup.
OKX said the platform brings trading, settlement, liquidation, margining, and risk management together in one place. This setup could let different types of markets share liquidity and capital pools, rather than running separately.
OKX also said users can build either permissioned or open markets, depending on regulatory needs. For example, regulated institutions could launch KYC-compliant venues, while Web3 projects could run decentralized, open-access markets using the same system.
Exchange OS is built for high-speed trading. OKX said it can handle up to 300,000 transactions per second with millisecond latency.
This launch is part of a larger trend where major crypto exchanges are moving beyond spot trading into tokenization, AI tools, and decentralized finance. Competition is growing as exchanges try to attract on-chain liquidity and find new revenue sources.
Introducing Exchange OS, a major upgrade to X Layer.
Deploy institutional-grade or Web3-native trading venues on open, permissionless infrastructure without rebuilding from scratch, and use customizable compliance controls to fit your framework.
