Kraken has increased the maximum leverage offered on BTC/USD margin trading to 20x for qualified traders in some markets. This measure allows treaders to take larger Bitcoin positions with less cash. The modification only affects BTC/USD margin positions on Kraken Pro; it has no bearing on other margin pairings or futures products. Kraken said the higher ceiling is designed to give traders more flexibility in sizing positions, while its existing margin engine, risk controls and liquidation system remain unchanged.
Before accounting for maintenance-margin needs and other expenses, a trader might manage a $20,000 position at 20x leverage with around $1,000 in margin. This implies that even a very little change in the price of Bitcoin can have a significantly greater impact on the trader’s account, even albeit it can also enhance prospective rewards.
Kraken stressed that the new 20x limit is not automatically available to every customer. Access depends on the trader’s eligibility and the market in which the account operates. The exchange also made clear that the increase is a higher ceiling, not a requirement for traders to increase their exposure.
10X leverage? Yesterday’s news…
BTC/USD margin trading now supports up to 20x leverage.
Same position sizing. Same liquidation tracking. Same margin visibility.
Available on both Kraken Pro and Desktop.

The underlying margin system has not changed. According to Kraken, liquidation prices, margin ratios and existing take-profit and stop-loss tools will continue to work under the same framework. Margin fees are also unchanged, while traders will continue to have visibility into their margin positions throughout their life.
The exchange has nevertheless warned users about the risks involved. A highly leveraged position has less room to absorb an adverse price move. Kraken may liquidate the trade if it drops below the necessary maintenance-margin threshold. Additionally, the exchange advised clients that losses from margin trading may surpass their initial investment.
The move comes at a time when the amount of leverage across the wider Bitcoin market is attracting attention. Crypto analytics firm CryptoQuant has reported a sharp rise in leverage on BTC-USDT perpetual futures this year. Its founder, Ki Young Ju, said the level is around 2.7 times higher than it was in January and is at a record level.
Ki Young Ju has urged caution, arguing that leverage has continued to build without the periodic liquidation events that usually help reduce excessive positioning. That assessment relates to the broader crypto derivatives market rather than Kraken’s BTC/USD margin product specifically, and Kraken has not commented on the CryptoQuant data.
Recent examples also show how quickly highly leveraged Bitcoin positions can approach liquidation. A reported $50 million Bitcoin short using 40x leverage was recently said to be only around $400 away from liquidation. The position was unrelated to Kraken’s announcement, but it illustrates how little room traders can have when leverage is very high.
