HashKey Group has joined the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation’s (DTCC) Digital Assets Advisory Services Industry Working Group, becoming the first Asian digital asset service provider to join the group. The working group includes more than 100 financial institutions and digital asset companies, including JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Nasdaq and the New York Stock Exchange.

Its members are looking at how tokenized assets can fit into traditional financial markets. The work covers areas such as issuance, settlement and custody, with a focus on connecting blockchain-based securities with existing market infrastructure.

HashKey brings experience from Hong Kong and other regulated markets across the Asia-Pacific region. Since 2023, the company has been involved in real-world asset tokenization and has participated in the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s Project Ensemble Architecture Community and Tokenised Bond Expert Group.

The DTCC has also been moving ahead with its own tokenization work. In July, it completed its first production-environment tokenized transactions using securities held at the Depository Trust Company (DTC), a DTCC subsidiary.

The trials covered several types of transactions, including equity transfers, collateral pledges, securities lending and delivery-versus-payment transactions involving U.S. Treasuries and repurchase agreements.

The experiments were carried out across a private blockchain based on Hyperledger Besu and the public Canton Network. The assets involved included Microsoft and Circle shares, the Invesco QQQ Trust, the SPDR S&P 500 ETF and a BlackRock Treasury ETF.

JPMorgan also completed a transaction involving shares of the Invesco QQQ Trust. The underlying securities remained in DTC custody, while blockchain-based records were created to represent them digitally.

DTC is one of the key pieces of infrastructure in U.S. securities markets and safeguards more than $114 trillion in securities. That figure refers to securities held within its custody infrastructure, rather than assets that have already been tokenized.

DTCC plans to launch standardized tokenization services in October. Under the planned system, eligible DTC participants could create tokenized versions of securities already held in the depository and transfer them to approved wallets. Participants would also be able to move between traditional and tokenized formats while keeping the underlying securities within DTC’s existing custody system.

HashKey has not announced a separate commercial agreement or joint tokenized product with DTCC. Its current role is participation in the working group and discussions around standards for institutional tokenized securities.

The move comes as large financial institutions increasingly explore blockchain technology for traditional market infrastructure. For HashKey, joining the group provides a direct opportunity to contribute an Asian perspective to discussions that could help shape how tokenized securities are handled globally.

More broadly, the participation of HashKey alongside major names such as JPMorgan and Goldman Sachs shows how the conversation around blockchain is shifting from experimentation toward practical questions about how tokenized assets can work within established financial markets.
