Investors may now directly access Zcash (ZEC) through Grayscale’s first spot exchange-traded fund (ETF). The new ZCSH fund had $14.8 million in trading volume on its first day. KuCoin reports that the ETF started trading on the NYSE Arca on August 25 with the ticker ZCSH. While Zcash itself remained at its best levels in years, the price increased by more than 3.5% throughout the session but concluded the day down 1.54%.
With the introduction, investors may now invest in Zcash without actually holding the privacy-focused cryptocurrency. ZCSH is a conversion of the Grayscale Zcash Trust, which was established privately in 2017, according to KuCoin.
The timing of the ETF launch comes as ZEC has staged a sharp rally. The cryptocurrency recently moved above $800 for the first time since 2018 and reached as high as about $850, according to market reports. The rally has been supported by growing interest around Grayscale’s ETF and renewed attention on Zcash’s privacy features.
Grayscale’s Steve Vanourny, head of index products, highlighted Zcash’s nearly decade-long network history, its fixed maximum supply of 21 million coins and its proof-of-work system. He also pointed to Zcash’s optional privacy features, which distinguish it from Bitcoin. Grayscale has described ZCSH as a high-risk satellite allocation for digital asset portfolios, according to the KuCoin report.
The ETF launch also comes as privacy has become a stronger part of the Zcash investment narrative. Cameron Winklevoss has recently backed the idea that private digital money could become increasingly important as artificial intelligence expands the ability to monitor financial activity.
Grayscale Chairman Barry Silbert has also said the company plans to use 100% of the Zcash ETF management fee for marketing, education and awareness efforts supporting Zcash.
The debut trading figures give investors an early indication of market interest, although $14.8 million is still only a first-day snapshot. The fact that ZCSH ended its opening session lower after gaining more than 3.5% intraday also shows how quickly sentiment can change in a market as volatile as crypto.
For Zcash, however, the ETF represents a significant change. A cryptocurrency that has long been associated with financial privacy now has a regulated US-listed investment product providing direct spot exposure. Whether that translates into sustained institutional demand will become clearer as trading in ZCSH develops.
