The Group of Seven (G7) has designated cryptocurrency-related crime as a major international security concern, specifically highlighting North Korea’s increasing use of crypto theft and cyberattacks for funding. In a joint statement after the G7 Summit in France, leaders called for stronger international cooperation to combat cyber-enabled financial crimes linked to North Korea, placing crypto theft alongside concerns about nuclear weapons, missile programs, and regional security.

The declaration signals that major economies now view digital asset-related cybercrime as a significant security issue, not just a financial or regulatory matter.

G7 leaders reiterated their commitment to North Korea’s complete denuclearization and expressed deep concern about its ongoing cyber activities. They specifically cited cryptocurrency thefts believed to fund weapons development despite international sanctions.

Western governments have repeatedly accused North Korean hacking groups, including the Lazarus Group, of stealing billions of dollars in digital assets from exchanges, DeFi platforms, and blockchain companies in recent years.

The statement also reflects broader concerns about cryptocurrencies’ role in geopolitical incidents. Earlier this year, security researchers reported that fraudsters demanded Bitcoin and Tether payments from vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, highlighting how digital assets can be exploited beyond traditional cybercrime.

The G7’s position marks a significant shift in global policy. Crypto-related threats are now discussed alongside military conflicts, sanctions enforcement, maritime security, and international diplomacy.

As digital assets become more integrated into the global financial system, governments are expanding blockchain surveillance, increasing sanctions enforcement, and strengthening compliance requirements. The declaration suggests cooperation among intelligence agencies, law enforcement, and regulators may intensify in the coming years.
