By purchasing Water Street Labs and CX Clearinghouse from BGC Group, sports apparel behemoth Fanatics is entering the rapidly developing prediction markets sector. Fanatics will be able to start, list, and settle its own prediction market contracts thanks to the acquisition of a federally licensed exchange and clearinghouse. The action is a reflection of the increasing popularity of prediction markets, where traders speculate on the results of anything from elections and sports to economic indicators.

Fanatics now has far more influence over how quickly it can launch new contracts and regulate trading activity on its platform, even if the acquisition’s financial details were not made public.

Over the past year, prediction markets have drawn a lot of attention as more and more institutional and retail players utilize them to share their opinions on what will happen in the future. By providing regulated and decentralized prediction products, platforms like Kalshi and the blockchain-based Polymarket have contributed to this movement.

The sector has also attracted major financial and crypto companies. Coinbase recently partnered with Kalshi to provide prediction market access across all 50 U.S. states, while Robinhood has also introduced event contracts through the same exchange. Sports betting companies are following a similar path, with DraftKings announcing plans to develop its own prediction market platform.

Against this backdrop, Fanatics believes its strong presence in the sports industry gives it a unique opportunity to bring prediction markets to a wider audience. The company’s Fanatics Markets platform, launched in late 2024, currently operates in 23 U.S. states and four territories.

The acquisition also opens the door for collaboration between Fanatics and BGC Group on new market data products. According to both companies, they plan to develop products that combine traditional financial information with data generated from prediction market trading.

Industry observers expect competition in prediction markets to continue increasing as more companies enter the space. With regulatory approval already in place through its latest acquisition, Fanatics is now well positioned to compete in a market that is rapidly becoming one of the fastest-growing segments of financial technology.
