Coinbase has launched “Coinbase for Agents,” a new platform that lets AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude connect directly to Coinbase accounts. These AI agents can trade crypto, rebalance portfolios, access market data, pay for digital services, and automate tasks within limits set by users. Coinbase says this is a big step toward “agentic commerce,” where AI systems handle more financial activities on their own.
Users can give AI agents instructions in plain language. For example, an investor might ask an agent to keep a certain mix of Bitcoin, Ethereum, XRP, and Solana, or to buy more if prices drop by a set amount.
At launch, these agents can trade in both spot and derivatives markets. Coinbase plans to add support for stocks and prediction markets later. The company has also included its Coinbase Advisor agent, which offers advice and guidance while following regulations.
A main feature of the launch is x402, Coinbase’s payment protocol for machines. This technology lets AI agents pay for things like premium research, data feeds, APIs, and computing power without needing manual checkouts or subscriptions.
Coinbase thinks that autonomous AI agents could become major players in digital commerce. The company points to forecasts that say AI systems might handle up to 20% of e-commerce by 2030. CEO Brian Armstrong has even said that AI agents could one day do more transactions than people.
To address security concerns, Coinbase is adding safeguards like separate portfolios, spending limits, trading restrictions, and controls on service access. Investors responded positively, and Coinbase shares rose more than 3% after the launch.
This move puts Coinbase alongside Robinhood in the competition to build AI-powered financial services. Many see this sector as a major growth area for both fintech and crypto.
Now you can use your favorite AI agent to control your Coinbase account (or a sub-account), with Coinbase for Agents.
