At its recent “System Update” event, Coinbase introduced several new products, showing its goal to become an “Everything Exchange.” The company plans to launch stock options trading this summer, crypto options later in the year, more pre-IPO trading products, AI-powered investing tools, and round-the-clock stock index markets.
Coinbase’s new strategy is much broader than just crypto trading. Soon, users will be able to trade stock options and stock indexes at any time. The company also plans to offer tokenized stocks, giving people a way to invest in equities using blockchain instead of traditional brokers.
A key announcement was the expansion of pre-IPO perpetual products. After launching SpaceX-related pre-IPO offerings, Coinbase now plans to let users get exposure to companies like OpenAI and Anthropic before they go public.
Coinbase also launched Coinbase Advisor, an AI-powered investment assistant registered with the SEC. CEO Brian Armstrong said the tool can review a user’s portfolio, account activity, and investment history, and help with decisions through easy conversations.
Coinbase added that AI agents built on platforms like Claude and ChatGPT can now connect to Coinbase accounts and make trades within set limits.
This move shows the trend toward agentic finance, where AI systems help manage portfolios and make trading decisions. Investors reacted positively, with Coinbase shares rising during trading, though some gains were lost after hours.
The expansion is part of Coinbase’s push to become a one-stop shop for crypto, stocks, derivatives, predictions, and AI-powered financial services.
