  • To improve its technological standing in the digital asset sector, Circle purchased about 1,000 blockchain patents from IBM.
  • Blockchain infrastructure, payments, banking, insurance, cloud security, and enterprise applications are all covered by the patent portfolio.
  • USDC, the Circle Payments Network, the Arc blockchain, and AI-powered financial products are among the patents that Circle hopes to utilize.

In a significant intellectual property transaction, Circle Internet Group, the issuer of USDC, purchased almost 1,000 blockchain-related patents from IBM with the goal of bolstering its position in the quickly developing digital asset market.

More than 680 patent families pertaining to blockchain infrastructure, banking, payments, insurance, supply-chain verification, enterprise technology, and cloud security are included in the acquired portfolio. The agreement’s financial terms were not made public.

Circle claims that as a result of the acquisition, it is now the biggest owner of blockchain patents in the US. Key products, such as USDC, Circle Payments Network, its Arc blockchain platform, and financial tools made for AI-powered payment systems, will be supported by the company’s intellectual property.

Circle’s traditional advantages, including regulatory compliance and transparency, are becoming industry standards as more companies enter the regulated digital dollar market. Rivals such as Tether, PayPal and fintech firms are expanding their own stablecoin offerings, while banks and payment companies are exploring blockchain-based settlement solutions.

IBM’s Blockchain Patents Give Circle A New Edge In The Crypto Race

Against this backdrop, Circle’s IBM patent acquisition represents a strategic shift. Instead of competing only through compliance and market adoption, the company is building a technology-focused advantage through intellectual property.

IBM was already one of the largest blockchain patent holders in the U.S., with hundreds of patents covering blockchain applications beyond cryptocurrencies, including enterprise security and financial infrastructure. By acquiring this portfolio, Circle gains access to years of blockchain research that would be difficult and costly for competitors to replicate.

The patent portfolio could help Circle protect its ecosystem as it expands beyond being a stablecoin issuer into a broader financial infrastructure provider. The company has linked the acquired technology to areas such as institutional blockchain solutions, payment networks and AI-driven financial transactions.

Circle Builds A Blockchain Patent Fortress As Stablecoin Rivals Expand

Since open-source development has always been preferred by the cryptocurrency business, strict patent enforcement may cause conflict with the larger blockchain community. Large patent portfolios are mostly used by tech businesses as defensive measures to avoid lawsuits rather than to stifle innovation.

Circle has positioned the acquisition as a way to support blockchain adoption rather than limit competition. The company’s leadership said intellectual property will play an important role in expanding onchain infrastructure and accelerating adoption.

As stablecoins become more competitive and regulatory advantages become less unique, Circle’s IBM patent deal highlights a new battleground in crypto: ownership of the underlying technology. Whether the portfolio becomes a defensive shield or a competitive weapon, Circle is betting that intellectual property will be a key advantage in the next phase of blockchain growth.
