BNY introduced its Digital Asset Custody platform in 2022. This platform helps clients store and manage digital assets with security measures to protect their holdings. These measures include splitting control of private keys among several parties, providing separate wallets for each client, and using secure systems to store private keys.
With the expanded service, eligible clients can use custody services for Bitcoin (BTC), Ether (ETH), Solana (SOL), and USD Coin (USDC). The bank also plans to add support for more cryptocurrencies and stablecoins in the future.
Custody is just one part of BNY’s digital asset business. The bank is also looking into services for digital cash, tokenized assets, payments, settlement, and moving assets used as collateral. These services could help financial institutions manage both traditional and digital assets within regulated systems.
According to the report, BNY manages about $55.8 trillion in assets under custody and administration and handles around $2.5 trillion in payments each day. Its move into the EU market highlights how established financial institutions are growing their digital asset services.
The bank is also looking into staking services. On August 4, digital asset firm Galaxy Digital and BNY announced they are exploring ways to offer staking through BNY’s custody platform. In this plan, Galaxy would provide the staking infrastructure and help design the service.
The EU expansion comes as regulators keep working on rules for crypto businesses. In its third update after the EU’s transitional deadline on July 1, ESMA’s MiCA register listed 309 authorized crypto-asset service providers.
For BNY, this expansion lets the bank serve institutional clients in one of the world’s main regulated digital asset markets. It also shows that more traditional financial institutions are interested in offering crypto services within established rules.
