Bitget has expanded its regulatory reach by registering as a Financial Services Provider in New Zealand. In other news, BitMEX announced it will close its exchange after more than 11 years. These moves show how major crypto exchanges are taking different directions, with one growing its regulated services and another leaving the market after leading the way in perpetual futures trading.
Bitget said it is now listed on New Zealand’s Financial Service Providers Register (FSPR), which lets it operate under the country’s official financial services rules. This registration allows Bitget to offer services like foreign exchange, money transfers, asset custody, portfolio management, and handling financial transactions for customers.
Additionally, the exchange has signed up for the Insurance and Financial Services Ombudsman (IFSO) Dispute Resolution Scheme in New Zealand. This provides qualified clients with access to a separate dispute resolution procedure.
Bitget said this registration fits its larger plan to build strong regulatory and compliance systems. The company is expanding beyond cryptocurrency into tokenized real-world assets, foreign exchange, and traditional financial products.
Chief Executive Officer Gracy Chen said that as digital finance changes, financial platforms need compliance systems that can handle a wider range of assets and services.
While Bitget announced its expansion, BitMEX revealed it is preparing to wind down its exchange business after a strategic review by parent company HDR Global Trading Limited.
