Researchers at Project Eleven have introduced a new zero-knowledge proof system designed to help recover Bitcoin that could become vulnerable to future quantum computing attacks.
The proposed solution works alongside the BIP-361proposal, allowing wallet owners to prove ownership of their funds without revealing private keys, even if quantum computers eventually break the cryptographic signatures securing today’s Bitcoin wallets.
The recovery method relies on modern wallet seed phrases and hash-based cryptography, which remain resistant to quantum attacks. However, the system would not be able to recover Satoshi Nakamoto’s estimated 1.1M BTC, as those early wallets do not meet the required technical conditions.
While the prototype has demonstrated significant performance improvements over previous approaches, it remains unaudited and would require major changes to Bitcoin’s consensus rules before it could be deployed on the live network.
