Binance Pay has expanded its crypto payment network in Japan, allowing eligible international tourists to use cryptocurrency at PayPay-supported merchants across the country through the HIVEX payment framework.
The service went live on September 30 and is available to eligible Binance Pay users visiting Japan. Binance said the rollout potentially covers its approximately 48 million eligible users across more than 100 countries and regions, subject to the requirements for using the service in Japan.
PayPay Merchants Can Accept Crypto Without Handling Crypto
The integration connects Binance Pay with PayPay’s existing merchant payment infrastructure, meaning participating businesses do not need to directly accept or manage cryptocurrency.

Instead, merchants continue receiving settlements in Japanese yen, while eligible tourists can pay using supported crypto assets through Binance Pay.
Thomas Gregory, VP of Payments & Fiat at Binance, said the integration connects traditional payment infrastructure with digital assets and gives international visitors another payment option while helping merchants serve customers from overseas.
Binance Pay Makes Crypto Payments Easier For Japan Tourists
Eligible tourists can make payments through the Binance app using either of two methods. They can display a payment code for a participating merchant to scan or scan a PayPay QR code through Binance Pay and enter the required payment amount.

The cryptocurrency is automatically converted into Japanese yen during the payment process. Binance said transactions are processed in real time, allowing tourists to pay without opening a Japanese bank account or downloading a separate local payment application.
The feature is designed specifically for international visitors and is not available to residents of Japan. Users must also complete Binance’s identity verification process and meet the applicable eligibility requirements.
HIVEX Connects Binance Pay With PayPay
The payment connection is powered by HIVEX, an interoperability framework developed by TBCASoft. The technology allows participating payment networks to connect through existing infrastructure rather than requiring merchants to adopt an entirely new payment system.
The latest launch follows Binance Japan’s earlier integration with PayPay in November 2025, which enabled users to buy and sell crypto using PayPay Money and PayPay Points through linked accounts.
The new payment functionality expands Binance Pay’s presence in Japan’s established QR payment ecosystem and follows its broader push to connect crypto payments with local payment networks across Asia.
In August 2026, Binance Pay also expanded its merchant payment coverage in Bhutan, enabling crypto payments at more than 3,700 merchants through DK Bank’s QR network.
