The Bank of Japan (BOJ) has reported that its central bank digital currency pilot processed 50,000 transactions per second in a stress test, giving Japan its clearest indication yet of how a possible digital yen could handle large payment volumes. The test combined 10,000 transaction updates per second with 40,000 balance inquiries.
The BOJ said the results suggest that CBDC capacity could potentially be expanded significantly, although the experiment does not mean Japan is ready to launch a retail digital yen. The central bank is still examining technical, security and policy issues before any decision is made.
The BOJ’s CBDC pilot has been running since April 2023. Alongside technical testing, the central bank has been discussing the project with private-sector participants through its CBDC Forum.

One of the tests looked at a situation in which thousands of customers might make payments to the same merchant within a short period. Without additional measures, the BOJ estimated that a single account could handle only around 50 to 100 transactions per second because database records would have to be updated sequentially.
The experimental system addressed this by dividing account records so that transactions could be processed in parallel. This pushed the capacity of a single account to around 6,000 transactions per second, although the BOJ found that dividing records too aggressively could itself reduce performance.
The broader 50,000-TPS test also revealed some challenges. Sudden spikes in transaction volumes caused latency to rise significantly. Database configuration, system tuning and controls on incoming requests would therefore become important if the infrastructure were expanded.

The BOJ also examined a hypothetical workload of 500,000 transactions per second. That scenario assumed 100,000 updates and 400,000 balance inquiries every second. Importantly, this was a design assumption used to study scalability and was not a level achieved by the current pilot.
The central bank said capacity could potentially be increased by adding application servers, database servers and network resources. Its analysis also suggested that splitting an account into hundreds of records could support much higher concentrated transaction volumes.
So far, the BOJ said its experiments have not identified a fatal technical barrier to increasing processing capacity towards the levels that might eventually be required for nationwide use. But that does not mean a production-ready digital yen system is around the corner.
A real-world system would need additional resources for security, redundancy, error recovery and disaster management. Multiple ledger-management systems could also be required, creating the challenge of keeping information consistent across different databases.
The BOJ is also examining geographically distributed infrastructure and backup systems to ensure that a problem in one location does not disrupt the wider network. Standardised APIs are being considered as well, potentially allowing the CBDC system to interact with banks and private payment networks.
Interestingly, the BOJ’s research is also touching on distributed-ledger technology, asset tokenization, stablecoins and tokenized deposits. However, these discussions do not mean the central bank has decided to use blockchain as the foundation of a digital yen.
For now, the 50,000-TPS result answers one technical question: a high-volume CBDC system appears technically achievable, at least under controlled test conditions. The bigger decision whether Japan should actually issue a digital yen remains open and will depend on further technical work and public discussion.
