Augustus, a financial technology startup, has raised $180 million in funding, bringing its valuation to $1 billion. The company is building new banking infrastructure for stablecoins, artificial intelligence, and instant global payments. Instead of creating its own stablecoin, Augustus wants to become a federally chartered clearing bank that helps financial institutions move money easily between traditional banking networks and blockchain systems.

Tiger Global led the funding round, with investors including Hummingbird, QED, and the founders of Nubank, Ramp, Circle and Deel. This investment shows the growing interest in companies building the financial infrastructure needed for stablecoins and digital payments.

CEO Ferdinand Dabitz says the current correspondent banking system is slow, costly, and limited to business hours. He believes future financial systems will need to settle payments at any time and use programmable money that works around the clock.

Augustus already offers euro-clearing services through its regulated entity in Finland and processes billions of euros in transactions each year. Its clients include international banks, fintech companies, and crypto firms like Kraken. Earlier this year, Augustus received conditional approval for a U.S. national bank charter from the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency (OCC) and plans to add direct U.S. dollar clearing once it gets final approval.

Unlike many firms entering the stablecoin sector, Augustus has no plans to launch its own digital currency. Instead, it wants to provide the banking infrastructure that enables financial institutions to use stablecoins alongside existing payment systems.

The company also thinks stablecoins will be important for artificial intelligence. Dabitz said that AI-powered financial systems will need programmable money for automated transactions. Stablecoins could also help businesses manage their funds better by letting them move money instantly across markets, instead of leaving it idle in correspondent banking accounts.

With this new funding, Augustus plans to expand its services in Latin America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, where access to U.S. dollar banking is still limited. The company hopes its technology will help modernize global payment systems as stablecoins become more common in mainstream finance.
