Bitcoin began the second quarter around $83,000. It had fallen to about $58,000 by the end of June as the wider economy looked shaky and riskier assets whipsawed.
Tesla has remained one of the biggest public companies with bitcoin but its holdings are far smaller than companies like Strategy.
Tesla has shared its crypto update while declaring mixed financial results for the second quarter. Tesla’s gross margin for the quarter was 16.8% and its GAAP net income was $1.11 billion.
Companies are supposed to record drops in the value of their digital assets as per current accounting rules. Bitcoin has bounced back from its late-June lows and was recently at $65,840. The reduced value reflects the value of Tesla’s holdings during the reporting period.
Tesla’s approach to bitcoin has remained largely consistent over the past four years. In early 2021, the company acquired $1.5 billion in bitcoin and temporarily accepted the cryptocurrency as payment for its vehicles. This payment option was suspended due to environmental concerns.
Tesla has retained its entire Bitcoin position of 11,509 BTC, currently worth approximately $755 million 🚀
