AI Can Help Wikipedia Fix Inaccurate Citations
A study by Nature Machine Intelligence suggests that artificial intelligence (AI) could help improve Wikipedia’s accuracy and reliability by automating the process of analyzing sources cited on the platform. The neural network side, SIDE, developed by Samaya AI, a London-based company, can automatically check if the sources support the claim made in the article and suggest alternatives for references that don’t match. This could help Wikipedia become a more reliable source for information, reducing the number of flawed and incomplete references on the platform.
A study by researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, has found that a machine learning system called SIDE, trained on a database of popular Wikipedia references, is able to accurately interpret articles. In nearly 50% of cases, SIDE followed the reference cited in the article, while in others, it suggested a better one. The study also revealed that 21% of users were satisfied with the AI’s references, 10% preferred existing sources, and 39% did not have any preference. The Supreme Court of India has warned against relying solely on Wikipedia, citing its user-generated editing model as unreliable and potentially misleading.
