European Union Calls For Global Expert Panel on AI
EU chief Ursula von der Leyen has called for a global panel of experts and technological companies to address the challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI). She emphasized that AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks like pandemics and nuclear war. The proposed AI group should be similar to the UN’s IPCC panel, which establishes scientific consensus on climate change. The panel should include scientists, tech companies, and independent experts to discuss the risks and benefits of AI for humanity.
By the end of this year, the EU, which has been leading the charge in AI regulation, hopes to approve the first AI law in history. “Our AI Act has already served as a global model. We must now concentrate on passing the regulations as soon as possible before moving on to implementation,” added der Leyen. The act wouldn’t go into effect until 2026, according to AFP.
